Kalfus Mandrake was a powerful Cynaran ruler of the Duchy of Vharia, who, in the year 1068/4, rebelled against the Kingdom of Iskandar, triggering the Iskari Civil War.

In his effort to overthrow the kingdom, Kalfus was joined by Duke Teraxas Strongfist of Cynara, and Duke Varek Bracken of Rhoyden.

The Iskari Civil War began with the death of King Ilcanar Cyrenäe II, who was poisoned by Alokkair’s agents. Since the king died without a rightful heir, disputes arose as to the proper royal successor.

For the next twenty years, a terrible conflict raged between the opposing factions before King Irenicus Blackburn finally crushed the rebellion was in the year 1087/4.

Fate of House Mandrake

By the war's end, Duke Kalfus Mandrake and two of his three sons were slain in battle, and King Irenicus ordered his last son to be executed, destroying House Mandrake forever. Irenicus then broke the estate into the four smaller Duchies, called: "Barstow, "Stormchapel," "Randivik," and "Vharia." Afterward, all four were ruled by loyal, hand-picked Iskari Lords.

Today, the ancient fortress of Castle Mandrake still exists, atop a great hill overlooking the city of Herronford, although for centuries it has been home to the powerful House of Arzadon.
