Sar-Katha, often called "sea-devils," are a species of monstrous fish-like humanoids that dwell in oceans, seas, underground lakes, and underwater caves.
Description
Sar-Katha are usually green-skinned; darker on the back and lighter on the belly. Many have dark stripes, bands, or spots, but these tend to fade with age. Adults reach a height of nearly six feet and can weigh up to 200lbs. They are vicious fighters who often raid human coastal settlements and prey upon other sea-dwelling races such as the Aquatic Elves. Their preferred weapons are tridents and nets.
These creatures are greatly feared because of their evil predatory nature; often attacking passing ships and raiding entire coastal regions. Sometimes, the creatures take captives back with them after a successful raid. Any creatures taken alive from raids are brought to the nearest lair and confined in cells— these prisoners are usually tortured and then eaten.
Origins
The exact origin of the Sar-Katha race is unknown. Some sages suggest that the creatures were created by an ancient nation of evil humans, whose Dark Gods foretold of an upcoming massive flood. The Sar-Katha were thus created to preserve their masters when the great deluge came upon them. But when the flood eventually came, the surface civilization was wiped away and all that remained were the Sea-Devils.
Other scholars claim that the Sar-Katha were actually created by the Aboleth, to be used as slaves and warriors in their underwater empire.
Society
Their lairs are usually constructed of stone, with many domed buildings. Thick seaweed and similar marine plants grow on and around and on these structures making them extremely hard to detect.
These creatures are extremely fond of wealth, which they use as a measure of influence, and for sacrifices to the deities that they worship in exchange for granted powers. Many Sar-Katha enjoy collecting pearls and coral formations, fashioning them into jewelry, which is then worn as a status symbol. Most of the treasure found in their lairs once belonged to their victims.
