Located in the Barrens, the Temple of Elemental Evil is a temple dedicated to the worship of the Dark Gods of Corwyn.

Many years ago, the evil cult that built the temple became a scourge on the surrounding region. The temple's military forces were eventually defeated by an alliance of Norwald, Orrek, and Erindar, at the fierce Battle of Emridy Meadows.

After that battle, the temple was abandoned by the evil cult and, today, is thought to nothing more than a ruin. The Grey Watchers keep a vigilant eye on the temple in case evil returns there. These rangers are usually based out of the nearby village of Hommlet.

Local History

Sixty years ago, the forces of evil and darkness gathered northeast of Hommlet and constructed a huge temple. The temple was a bastion for their armies of gnolls, bugbears, ogres, trolls, and giants; not to mention the evil human masters of the place and the demons and other foul creatures that served them. From this awful place, the malevolent denizens unleashed earthquakes, storms, fires, and floods upon the countryside.

Monsters and evil men were drawn to the area like moths to a great flame. The Temple of Elemental Evil took many years to complete, but during that time, the forces of good realized that they could not allow such a place to exist.

The Kingdom of Erindar, aided by the Freehold of Norwald, rallied their forces and sacked the temple after the Battle of Emridy Meadows.

After this campaign, most of the evil forces were destroyed or driven off. The temple itself was greatly damaged, but the underground levels were extensive and dangerous even for those heroic folk. So the Temple of Elemental Evil was sealed with great magic, imprisoning a powerful demon within its confines.

Twenty years later, bandits began troubling the regions around Hommlet. Evil humanoids and strangely garbed priests were once again seen on the road.

Within the following year, it became clear that the Temple of Elemental Evil was rising again. This time, the folk of Hommlet and the surrounding area helped coordinate attacks by bands of adventurers against the ruined but still-occupied temple.

Eventually, the evil was once again overthrown, and this time the temple’s dangerous lower levels were destroyed. Since then, the territory has prospered in the peace that has settled into the area.
