Commonly known as "Thanns" or "Thannish," the Thann are the largest single human ethnic group found on Corwyn.

The largest Thannish populations are located within the Kingdoms of Eldara, Gwynne, Orel, and Thûle. Significant Thannish minorities also exist in southern Alveron, the Reach, as well as the kingdoms of Rennsfar and Serathyr.

The Thannish people are made up of seven ethnic subgroups, each with distinct customs and languages;:

Appearance

Thanns are usually tall and slim, with sharp, angular features. Thannish men and women have black hair, dusky skin, and bright eyes of brown, green, or grey.

Outlook

Other races sometimes feel that Thannish folk are arrogant and greedy, for they see themselves as the chosen people because so many ancient cultures originated from their ethnic group. In fairness, the Thann did establish many of the greatest kingdoms ever seen on Corwyn; so their arrogance is not entirely misplaced.

Most other human races tend to view the Thannish as greedy and untrustworthy, regarding them with suspicion. Thanns are extremely proud, quick tempered, and are slow to forget even a perceived slight; whence the saying, "As brittle as Thannish glass.". Many Thanns are great merchants and traders, and it has often been said; "The Thannish love money more than life itself."

There are strongly held class and gender divisions set up in Thannish society, with a person's station at birth playing a crucial role in how he or she is measured by Thann society. Although few Thanns speak openly about the strict class-based system in their society; most Thannish men and women live out their lives according to their station, risking social expulsion or even imprisonment if they do not adhere to societal norms. Thannish, especially those dwelling in the Heartlands, view themselves as superior to all other other humans races and even to those Thanns who dwell outside the region.

Another aspect of Thannish culture is maintaining family honor and pride. Losing face is considered the worst of cultural sins, and most Thannish would do anything to avoid such. Saving face demands that all Thannish treat others as they present themselves, regardless whether such facades bear any resemblance to the truth. One a person or family loses face, they often lose their status and can be relegated to a lower social class within Thannish society. Privacy is therefore a precious commodity, for it allows individuals to act as they wish without outside scrutiny, which could result in such social punishment. Thannish also place great importance on hospitality and manners. There are strictly defined rules and benefits for both guests and hosts. Guests cannot inflict harm on their guests, and are protected by a sacred tradition of guest right under the roof of their hosts once invited in.

The social classes of Thannish society are in order from highest to lowest; The Ruling Class, the Advisers, the Military, the Clergy, the Merchants, the Artisans, the Laborers, the Farmers, and lowest, the Servant class. Only women are are allowed to marry above their social class and all such arrangements are strictly scrutinized within the Thannish culture.

Thannish Characters

Some Thanns are drawn to adventuring in hopes of finding quick wealth that will allow them to return to a life of luxury, and thereby improve their social station. Other human races view Thannish as avaricious, lazy, pampered, and arrogant. In truth most Thanns seek nothing more than a lifestyle of comfort and obedience to the Gods. Thannish men and women can easily become characters of any player class, but most prefer to become rogues, fighters, and clerics.

Languages

The Thannish people speak Thannish as well as common, and there are five major dialects. Thannish is one of the seven original dialects of western men, and the language of the Thannish people of the Heartlands region of Corwyn. This language is most commonly spoken throughout the kingdoms of Eldara, Gwynne, Orel, and Thûle; as well as southern Alveron, eastern Serathyr, the Valley of Lost Cities, and the Kratheri Peninsula. Thannish is one of the most widespread languages heard on the continent of Corwyn today. In addition to Thannish, many educated and wealthy Thanns speak either Rynnish or Ralat.
